Plus Sizing

Plus-sizing means a larger wheel and a shorter sidewall that add up to the same overall diameter. Go up an inch of rim and the sidewall has to lose exactly half an inch on each side.

Get that right and nothing downstream changes. Get it wrong and you have introduced a speedometer error for the sake of appearance.

The target here is ±1%, not ±3%

Three percent is the general limit for tire changes, because that is where the speedometer, ABS and stability control start reading meaningfully wrong. Plus-sizing is held to about one percent, and the reason is simple: this is a change you chose to make. There is no reason to accept an error you introduced deliberately.

Aspect ratios are not continuous

The arithmetic gives an exact aspect ratio. Tires are made in 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, 65, 70 and 75. The answer is the nearest one manufactured, and the residual error is what decides whether the combination works.

Widening the tire lowers the aspect ratio needed for the same sidewall height, which is usually what makes a large rim step land close.

What you are trading

Below about 4 inches of sidewall, potholes start costing wheels rather than tires. Steering response sharpens, ride firms up, and impact damage goes from a rare annoyance to a recurring expense on bad roads.

The wheel also gets heavier as the tire gets lighter — and the wheel is unsprung, rotating mass, the worst place in a car to add weight. Plus-sizing frequently makes a car slower to accelerate and worse to ride in. Check the actual wheel weight before assuming bigger looks better and drives better.

Check clearance at the extremes

Section width is the widest point of the sidewall. It needs checking at full steering lock and full suspension compression, not sitting still.
